Yankees' Pavano to pitch Saturday

Sports Network | August 21, 2008

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - The oft-injured Carl Pavano is scheduled to start for the New York Yankees on Saturday in Baltimore, according to the Newark Star Ledger.

"He worked extremely hard to put himself in this position, to get back and help this club," Pavano's agent Tom O'Connell told the newspaper, "and he's really excited about the opportunity and he's up to the challenge."

The 32-year-old right-hander, who has been dubbed "The American Idle" and "The Rajah of Rehab" by the New York tabloids, inked a four-year, $39.95 million contract with the Yankees before the 2005 season, but has made just 19 appearances for the club, compiling a 5-6 record.

Pavano has suffered injuries to his shoulder, back, ribs, buttocks and elbow since arriving in the Bronx.

Pavano last pitched in the majors on April 9, 2007. He has been out all year after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery on June 5, 2007.

Pavano has made five starts on a minor-league rehabilitation assignment, registering a 1-1 record with a 3.86 earned run average and 19 strikeouts in 19 innings.
