Report: Yankees demote Cabrera, waive Sexson

Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees have reportedly made some surprising moves Friday, prior to the start of a three-game set with the Kansas City Royals.
According to the YES Network, outfielder Melky Cabrera was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and first baseman Richie Sexson was waived.
The struggling Cabrera had only three hits in his last 26 at-bats. For the season, the 24-year-old Dominican native is batting .242 with eight homers and 36 RBI in 117 games.
New York signed the 33-year-old Sexson on July 18 after the Seattle Mariners released him eight days earlier. He went 7-for-28, with one homer and six RBI in 21 games.
To fill the roster spots, the club recalled utilityman Brett Gardner and infielder Cody Ransom from Scranton.
It will be Gardner's second stint in the Bronx, following a call-up last month which saw him hit an anemic .153 with seven RBI in 17 games. He was hitting a robust .366 in his last 10 games in Triple-A.
Coming into the weekend, the Yankees stand at 64-57, good enough for third place in the AL East, languishing 9 1/2 games behind first-place Tampa Bay and 6 1/2 behind the second-place Red Sox.
